Physical Description
Oil paintings
The later years of Rembrandt Peale's career were devoted to copying his portrait of George Washington, which he first painted in 1823 in an attempt to render a perfect likeness of the first president. The resulting image was widely acclaimed by Washington's contemporaries and is identified as Peale's "porthole" portrait - named for the simulated stone framing device painted around the figure. At least eighty copies of the painting have been recorded, and in this example commissioned by James Lenox, Washington is dressed in a military uniform complete with gold epaulets.
