George Washington was one of James Lenox's major interests, and the philanthropist purchased at least five portraits of him for this collection. This example by Rembrandt Peale is after Gilbert Stuart's first life portrait of Washington, distinguished as the "Vaughan" portrait from one of its early owners. Peale reportedly made this copy as an illustration for his lectures on image of Washington.
