Notes
Content: Image has slight foxing at corners and along center crease. Written under image: "The Birth of Erichthonius. Gaea, goddess of Earth ... presents the young Erichthonius to Minerva. Behind Minerva is Triton and beside Gaea is Vulcan. Two Victories hover over the scene. Casucini Collection at Chiusi." Cf. illustration with Source ID 1624638.
Content: Erichthonius is also known as Erechtheus. A legendary king of Athens, he was the son of Gaea and Hephaestus. Born with the lower half of a snake like all the "aborigines" (first inhabitants of the world), he was given into the care of Minerva.
Content: Minerva (goddess of wisdom) and Vulcan (blacksmith of the gods, here symbolized by tongs) are Roman names, their Greek equivalents being, respectively, Athena and Hephaestus. Triton was a sea deity and the son of Poseidon, supreme god of the oceans.
