Content: A character actor, O'Neal appeared in many ANT productions including "Anna Lucasta," "Striver's Row" and "Three's Company." In 1944, he made his Broadway debut in "Anna Lucasta," for which he garnered three awards including a New York Drama Critics Award for best supporting performance. O'Neal appeared in the film version of the play as well as other motion pictures including "Pinky" "No Way Out," and "Something of Value." O'Neal was a college lecturer and was also active as a labor leader. He served as president of the Actor's EquityAssociation from 1964 to 1973 and international president of Associated Actors and Artists of America from 1970 to 1988. O'Neal died on August 25, 1992 in New York City.

O'Neal moved to New York in 1936 and later joined the Rose McClendon Players, a Harlem based theatrical troupe, where he remained until 1940 when he left to establish the American Negro Theatre (ANT) with playwright Abraham Hill.
